Penny’s London Marathon run for Mencap

Monday 13 January 2020

Propertymark’s Penny Rusbridge is running the London Marathon 2020, raising money for Mencap UK, the race’s official charity.

Penny, who is a Membership Documents Coordinator in Propertymark’s membership team, took up running in 2015 and has since taken part in weekly park runs, 5ks, 10ks, half-marathons, and five road marathons plus one trail. She is also a member of the Kenilworth Runners Group.

Support from Propertymark

Penny has dyspraxia and says Propertymark’s open and supportive culture, alongside her running, has helped her to grow in confidence and be more open about her condition.

Running ahead

Penny has already begun training – and is also undertaking the 40-mile Coventry Way run just three weeks before the race. Penny’s experiences with dyspraxia led her to raise money for Mencap, to support others with learning disabilities.

I am delighted to be running the London Marathon 2020 for Mencap as I have a learning disability myself with speech and communication difficulties. I struggle to do lots of things.

I couldn't speak when I was born I had to go to a special school and they taught me to speak. At primary school, I struggled with my education and therefore have dyspraxia which affects the way that I communicate.

As someone with a borderline disability, I do not get any help. I would like to raise money for this charity because I understand the work that they do and the importance of it.

Right now, people with a learning disability face inequalities in every area of life with almost one in three young people with a learning disability spending less than one hour outside their home on a typical Saturday.

By supporting Team Mencap you will be helping support people with a learning disability to live the life they choose and do the things they love. Penny Rusbridge, Propertymark

Penny has also appeared on BBC Coventry and Warwickshire where she was interviewed by Lorna Bailey, the interview can be heard on BBC Sounds

Penny aims to raise £2,000 for Mencap and has a fundraising page for supporters to donate.
