Labour Party Comment on the Green Deal

Click to download

Caroline Flint MP, Labour's Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, has responded to the latest information on the Green Deal by stating that:

"If it's done properly, a pay-as-you-save energy efficiency scheme could cut carbon emissions, create jobs and lower bills for families. But with no information about what interest rates will be charged, and warnings that the take-up could be much lower than expected, people will be worried that the Government's plans look like a desperate, last-minute attempt to force people to have the Green Deal by the back-door.  The Government should focus on improving the Green Deal to make sure it delivers savings for hard-pressed bill payers so people want to take it up, instead of trying to force it on the public. The Department for Communities and Local Government needs to work with the Department for Energy and Climate Change and adopt Labour's proposals for affordable interest rates, a boost for small businesses and increased support for the fuel poor to make the Green Deal work."

Deputy PM Announcement - Green Deal

The Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, has delivered a speech on the Green Deal in which it was announced that at least £540 million of the Government's Green Deal funding - worth £1.3bn per year in total - will be targeted at helping the poorest.
