Cleaner vehicle checker

Monday 18 September 2017

The Greater London Authority's Cleaner Vehicle Checker, a new scheme which will identify the most polluting vehicles, will be launching next month.

This scheme aims to put an end to the smoke and mirrors that have been employed in official emissions testing with ‘cheat devices’ or flaws in the testing process. Currently, cars only have to pass Euro Standards emissions testing, which has until now, been limited to laboratory tests and have been proven to be unrealistic.

The Cleaner Vehicle Checker will be an online web tool which will provide purchasers with an accurate and independent evaluation of the emissions of most new cars and vans, both on the road and the showroom forecourt.

New vehicles will be given ratings on a scale of A+ (best) to H (worst) based on the level of NOx emissions they produce on the road.

How will it work?

Motorists will be able to type in the model of the new car or van they are considering buying and find out more about its actual ‘on the road’ emissions. This will:

  • help people make an informed choice and minimise the number of ‘more polluting’ vehicles being bought and used in London
  • help consumers recognise the environmental benefits of switching to zero or ultra-low emission vehicles and encourage their purchase
  • encourage manufacturers to produce vehicles that conform to the EU’s full ‘real-world driving emissions’ standards much sooner than when legally required by 2021
  • provide a free ‘health check’ service to London fleet operators to understand how their current fleet performs and where significant improvements could be made, and
  • create a tool to allow the Greater London Authority Group and local authorities to lead by example and only buy or lease the cleanest vehicles

As part of a wider package, one of the projects aims is for businesses to adopt the cleaner vehicle rating system as part of their procurement policies; this will help to ensure any diesel or petrol vehicles brought into fleets are as clean as possible.

The free fleet check service may be beneficial to London based Propertymark Protected agents who are interested in learning more about their fleets’ emissions performance. Fleet managers will be able to download, complete and submit a template with their fleet details through the website to receive an analysis report from Emissions Analytics. The report will show the emissions performance of the fleet if all the existing cars and vans were replaced with the latest Euro 6 models of the same, so fleet managers will be able to identify their worst polluting vehicles and prioritise them for replacement with cleaner options.

With many estate agents operating in London and around the country, the fleet check service and the Cleaner Vehicle Checker will be a great opportunity for the property industry to show that it is being proactive in improving air quality.

How do I sign up?

The new Cleaner Vehicle Checker will be available online from the Autumn - so watch this space.
