It's National Apprenticeship Week 2018

Monday 05 March 2018

It's that time of year again, where we celebrate the very best of what learning has to offer whilst encouraging even more people to choose apprenticeships as a pathway to a great career.

This year's theme is ‘Apprenticeships work’, aimed at showcasing the ways apprenticeships produce huge benefits for individuals, businesses, communities and the wider economy.

Propertymark Qualifications has been supporting the Trailblazer group of employers and professional body representatives, led by Propertymark Protected agent Aidan Reed, in developing the next steps in the roll out of the new Junior Estate Agent apprenticeship standard.

With the new standard at level two agreed, work has been concentrated on developing the assessment plan for how apprentices will be assessed and graded against the standard. We’ve also been ensuring that other awarding and assessment experts and organisations as well as training providers have been part of, and involved in, the process.

After several iterations and following changing policy and feedback from the Institute for Apprenticeships, the assessment plan was re-submitted for approval on 28 February 2018.

The approvals process is expected to take about six weeks. If all goes as planned, this penultimate piece of the apprenticeship jigsaw will be complete and employers and training providers will then be able to start training against the new standard by late Spring. The next step, and final piece of the jigsaw, will be for those organisations who want to offer what is known as ‘end point assessment’ for the apprenticeship to apply to the Education and Skills Funding Agency. Once such ‘end point assessment organisations’ - or EPAOs for short - are approved, apprentices will then be able to be assessed and achieve the apprenticeship.

Michael Smith, Head of Propertymark Qualifications, speaking about National Apprenticeship Week said:

“An apprenticeship is a great way for a new entrant to get a head start in a profession or area they want to work in. Our own apprentice joined us after his GCSEs and is making good progress with his on and off the job training and development, earning whilst he learns the key skills and gaining the qualifications that we need in our business.

“It’s great to know that we have been supporting the industries and professions that Propertymark promotes to develop a similar programme which will offer businesses in the property disciplines the same opportunity we have had and enable them to nurture and develop talent for the next generation of property professionals. I look forward to continuing our work with the professional bodies to provide members and businesses across the sector access to and support for the new apprenticeship when ready.”

The forthcoming apprenticeship in Junior Estate Agent covers the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed in a customer facing role, together with the administrative, technical and legislative understanding, for someone working in residential sales, auctioneering and/or commercial property.
