Do you understand your recycling obligations?

Monday 12 March 2018

When it comes to getting rid of old for sale and sold boards, do you know how to dispose of them correctly?

In the UK alone, 80 per cent of all estate agent boards go to landfill, with Correx boards (which are made from a thermo-plastic called polypropylene), taking up to 500 years to degrade.

And with over 4000 tonnes of estate agent boards produced each year in the UK - that's enough to fill 800 large skips in case you were wondering - it's no wonder that there has been an increased move towards recycling in support of environmental policy.

The Environmental Protection Act 1990 sets the standard for waste management in the UK.  All commercial waste must be disposed of in an ethical and responsible manner, and this includes the disposal of estate agency boards.

Boards can no longer be disposed of at municipal sites along with domestic waste, so if you do abandon them at your local waste centre, you will invariably be lumped with a hefty, one-off disposal charge. Agents have a duty of care to correctly dispose of business waste, and fines for unsafe or unlawful disposal are steep and could ultimately lead to prosecution if boards are not discarded of properly.

Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Michael Gove MP cemented the Government's stance on the importance of recycling last month by announcing that as part of the their 25 year plan, the use of 'single use plastic' would be banned, and must be replaced with recyclables. He said:

"Our Environment Plan sets out how over the next 25 years we will radically reduce the waste that is choking oceans and rivers, cleanse our air of toxic pollutants and create new habitats for our most precious wildlife to thrive. Through this plan we will build on our reputation as a global leader in environmental protection, creating an environment everyone can enjoy and helping the next generation flourish."

There are a number of regional services agents can use, such as Estate Agency Recycling and The Board Service, that offer solutions to deal with estate agency board disposal, so you not only minimise your negative impact on the environment and comply with the law, but also benefit from the feel-good factor associated with being environmentally responsible.
