Keeping up with CPD

Wednesday 05 July 2017

With half of the year gone already, have you been logging your annual CPD hours?

As a vital part of your membership, tracking and documenting the skills, knowledge and experience that you gain both formally and informally as your work keeps you ahead of the competition and at the forefront of your profession.

All ARLA Propertymark members are required to complete at least 12 hours of CPD (continuing professional development) a year - that's just one hour a month!

What CPD have you done this week?

It is highly likely that you have undertaken some CPD in one form or another this week. Your day-to-day role of engaging with clients, checking trade forums and reading emails will inevitably lead you to seek answers to questions which will in turn contribute to your personal CPD.

CPD is a membership requirement for the vast majority of our members and for good reason.

The property industry is a complex and highly competitive sector in which you and your colleagues strive to increase market share though differentiating your business from similar agencies within the local area, be they independents, multi branch agencies, franchises, corporate offices or online only agencies. You need to maximise the potential of absolutely every opportunity that comes your way. And that’s what CPD is.

Log your learning this week

But logging it can be such a pain when you’re busy, right?

Wrong. It’s quick and simple to log into the members area of the website, choose CPD and select the current year.

You’ll be asked for a couple of sentences to describe your learning outcome. The reason that we do this is based on a tried to tested study technique – not dissimilar to the revision techniques that might be relevant to GCSE or A Level students in your household in recent months; by taking time to think about your learning outcomes you contribute to the process of committing the initial learning to your long term memory.

If however you wait until December to log a whole year’s worth of CPD, it will be less credible and far less productive. Regardless of whether you think of yourself as a learner and how experienced you are, you will have done CPD recently. Make sure you don’t miss the opportunity. And as only 12 hours’ of your overall CPD needs to be formally logged it isn’t too late to start logging 2017 now!
