Government announce new Housing Minister in Cabinet reshuffle

Tuesday 09 January 2018

The government have renewed their focus on housing this week, as Theresa May commits to fixing the broken market in a Cabinet shakeup.

As part of the ministerial reshuffle, MP for Esher and Walton, Dominic Raab, was appointed as Minister of State for Housing, replacing Alok Sharma MP. As the fourth housing minister in the last three years, and the sixteenth in the last twenty, Dominic will work alongside Sajid Javid MP in his reappointed post as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government.

In a tweet, Raab said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed working at MoJ on court reform, my thanks to the team there … and I’m looking forward to getting stuck into the housing brief, vital to building the new homes we need."

Earlier in the week Javid returned to his post as the Secretary of State, with the addition of 'housing' to his title. He will continue to be responsible for the overall leadership and strategic direction of the department, with housing now officially part of his remit.

Javid commented: "Building the homes our country needs is an absolute priority for this government and so I’m delighted the Prime Minister has asked me to serve in this role. The name change for the department reflects this government’s renewed focus to deliver more homes and build strong communities across England."

The Department of Communities and Local Government is also getting a revamp, having been renamed as the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG). The rebranding is an attempt by Theresa May to reflect the importance she has placed on housing, having recently said it was her “personal mission” to fix the housing crisis.

Mark Hayward, Chief Executive, NAEA Propertymark and David Cox, Chief Executive, ARLA Propertymark, comment on the appointment of Dominic Raab as Housing Minister:

“We would like to congratulate Dominic Raab on his appointment to Minister of State for Housing. We have been working closely with Alok Sharma in this role previously, alongside Sajid Javid as Communities Secretary, to make suggestions on plans to ultimately regulate the sector and make the process of buying, selling, renting or leasing a property better for consumers. If housing is genuinely a priority for the Government, then continuity and consistency with the new Housing Minister and Sajid Javid is absolutely key, and we look forward to working with them both over the coming months.”
