More about Plymouth
Plymouth is the biggest city in Devon and is also within the top
20 cities in the UK. It has a population of over 250,000 people and
its main industry comes from the seaport. Plymouth is home to the
largest operational naval base in Western Europe and the city also
has links to Spain and France via Ferry.
Plymouth is home to the 9th largest University in the
UK with over 35,000 students studying at the university every year.
The university is also the main employer of the city providing
3,000 jobs. The university has a very biased Naval feel to it with
courses such as Marine Biology and Earth, Maritime Business, Marine
engineering and Surf Science being on offer.
The Vision of Plymouth is currently being developed and could
potentially see the population exceed 300,000 and could also add
35,000 homes to the area. The council also wish to add a cruise
terminal to their dock. This move is in order to try and boost the
city's economy and also to create more jobs for the people of
Plymouth. As Unemployment is slightly over the national average,
this move has been thought to put the city well below the national
average of Unemployment.
The Royal Albert Bridge and the Tamar Bridge are based in
Plymouth and join Cornwall to the city as well as the rest of the
UK. The two bridges are the most famous landmarks in the region,
other than Lands End and Lizard Point.
